A dental implant is an artificial tooth, a post that is fused to bone with a crown mounted on it. The process of dental implantation requires a healing period, and it is essential that you adhere to certain guidelines to ensure proper healing.
After undergoing the process of getting a dental implant, the last thing that you want to have happen is for your implant to heal improperly; this will often necessitate reinserting the implant, but thankfully, following a few simple rules can greatly increase your probability of success. The process of healing/fusing dental implants, also known as osseointegration, usually takes between 6 and 8 months to complete.
The following are some actions that you can take to ensure proper healing. Eating only soft foods is an extremely important action that will significantly aid your dental implant in healing properly; excessive pressure can loosen or break your implant from the bone, and soft foods are less likely to apply this high of a pressure. Along similar lines, avoiding activities with the potential for impacts to the jaw will reduce the probability of improper healing. Healthy bone decreases the time that your implant takes to integrate, so if you are experiencing a longer recovery time, then this could be the reason why. Lastly, a proper diet and plenty of rest will help your body stay healthy throughout the process and reduce the amount of time that you need to recover.
Depending on the process that you are undergoing, you may still need an abutment before you can get your crowns, which will take an addition 2-3 weeks of healing time. We hope that you now understand a few factors that contribute to your healing process, and we look forward to seeing you for the next steps.
