What is the Difference Between Dentures and Implant Supported Dentures?
Posted on 2/22/2021 by Olympia Prosthodontics & Cosmetic Dentistry
The choices for artificial tooth solutions are numerous. Each patient must make the decision for themselves based upon their own set of circumstances. More patients choose dentures than any other solution offered. As with any choice, dentures have good points and bad points. Most people know about the issues with traditional dentures slipping out of place while eating and talking. There are alternatives.
Dentures are made to fit in the patient's oral cavity. They are made of plastic and are placed directly onto supportive gum tissue. To hold them in place, the adhesive is used. This can come in either a paste form, a powder, or in some cases a strip. This allows the patient to be able to speak and eat with confidence that their dentures will stay in place.
Conventional dentures can be removed to allow for thorough cleaning with a soft bristle brush and denture cleaning solution. They are soaked overnight in cold water to rid them of bacteria. Hot water is not recommended because it can cause them to warp out of shape which will cause them to not fit securely any longer.
Implant Supported Dentures
As mentioned above traditional dentures have the reputation of not staying in place and shifting at the most inopportune times. One way to remove that problem from the equation is with implant-supported dentures. This involves having dental implants placed first. They are embedded into the jawbone becoming a permanent fixture in the patient's mouth. The dentures are then secured either by a socket or a wire mechanism to the implant. This removes the need for adhesive and gives a more secure feel to the dentures. It also means they stay in place and patients can eat without restriction to their diet. Implant-supported dentures are far more expensive than traditional dentures because of the additional procedures involved but we will be able to better assess your situation to determine what you might need at your next office visit.
