When you get dentures, you need to make sure you clean them every day. Whether fixed or removable, dentures need regular care, just like natural teeth.
Halitosis and Dentures
When you have denture breath, the unpleasant odor comes from the dentures. If you do not clean dentures every day, bacteria will build-up, causing the dentures to smell. The bacteria settle in small crevices or may get caught under the denture arch or in tiny pores. Therefore, you need to do a thorough job of cleaning.
Do You Have Denture Breath?
Maybe you are not totally sure your dentures smell. If so, remove them and place them inside a plastic bag and seal it. After several minutes, take a quick whiff. If you notice a bad odor, you need to devote more time to clean your dentures. If you do not notice an unpleasant smell and you have halitosis, you may have a gum infection, or you may need to clean your tongue more thoroughly. Keep in mind, too that older people have more lactobacilli and yeast in their saliva. Therefore, you need to be more vigilant about cleaning your dentures or your teeth when you get older.
Getting Rid of Denture Breath
One of the best ways to keep your dentures sparkling clean is to soak them overnight. Place them in a denture cleaning solution while you sleep. Brush your gums and tongue with toothpaste to get rid of any leftover bacteria in your mouth. After cleaning your dentures overnight, use a soft-bristled toothbrush or denture brush on your dentures to remove plaque and bacteria. Drink more water during the day to rinse away germs and food.
We suggest you schedule an appointment yearly for a denture and mouth exam. Not only can we inspect the quality of your dentures and adjust them, as needed, but we can also assess your gum health. Doing so will prevent uncomfortable fitting dentures and denture breath. Give us a call today if you need your dentures or gums evaluated. We can fit you into our schedule at a time that works for you.
