Signs You Have Denture Sores

Posted on 8/9/2021 by Olympia Prosthodontics & Cosmetic Dentistry
Signs You Have Denture SoresSores on your gums or other parts of your mouth can be a perfectly normal aspect of getting used to a new set of dentures, or they can be a sign that your dentures do not fit properly. In both cases, there are different ways to treat denture sores and ease your discomfort. Read on to learn more about the signs of denture sores and what you can do about them.

Symptoms of Denture Sores

Denture sores can present as red spots or larger patches. You might have general soreness and tenderness throughout your gums, or you could just have a sore in one specific area. If your dentures do not fit properly, you may develop sores where the dentures rub against your gums. Wearing your dentures while you sleep or not cleaning them thoroughly can also cause bacteria to build up, leading to sores in areas besides just your gums, such as on the roof of your mouth.

How to Heal Denture Sores

If you are still getting used to a new set of dentures, try rinsing your mouth out with warm salt water to ease your pain and reduce inflammation. Make sure you always take your dentures out at night, clean them thoroughly, and soak them in water while you sleep, as practicing proper oral hygiene can prevent not only denture sores, but oral infections as well.

However, if you have worn dentures for a while and have just started to notice new sores or other irritation, your dentures may need to be adjusted or relined. Relining involves placing a putty-like substance on the base of your dentures so they fit more comfortably against your gums, while readjusting involves making a few quick changes in our office to improve the fit of your dentures. If you are experiencing sores or other discomfort with your dentures, call us today to see how we can help.
