Cleaning Your Dentures to Reduce the Chances of Bad Breath

Posted on 9/21/2021 by Olympia Prosthodontics & Cosmetic Dentistry
Cleaning Your Dentures to Reduce the Chances of Bad BreathWhen eating, bits of food particles might get stuck on your dentures and lead to bad breath. This is because the lingering food causes plaque that could form a layer around the dentures, producing a bad smell. If you don't clean your dentures properly and on a regular basis, bacteria will build up and cause dental infections. Luckily, you can prevent bad breath and other dental infections by thoroughly cleaning your dentures.

Cleaning Your Dentures

The best way to prevent bad breath is by cleaning your dentures regularly. Clean them on a daily basis to get rid of plaque and food particles that could cause smelly breath. This will leave you speaking confidently to your loved ones. When cleaning your dentures, there are three steps that you should follow for excellent results; soaking, brushing, and rinsing. You should start by soaking them in a denture cleanser tablet to give them a deep clean. This will ensure that all odor-causing bacteria are removed. It also eliminates bacteria that could cause infections.

You can also use a denture adhesive to clean your dentures. This method helps prevent food from getting trapped underneath the dentures by creating a solid seal between them and the gums. Adhesives allow you to enjoy meals without worrying about plaque or food particles that can lead to bad breath. It is also important to keep in mind that brushing and the use of adhesives cannot guarantee maximum effectiveness.

This is because there are food particles that brushing can miss. Therefore, you should also floss your dentures for better results. Just like you would floss your permanent teeth, flossing dentures has numerous benefits. You should floss the dentures on a regular basis, preferably several times a week.
