Dental sedation or sedation dentistry typically involves the application of various techniques to help a patient relax and remain comfortable while undergoing a dental treatment procedure. Many people tend to avoid dental visits simply because they feel scared or they have had bad experiences from previous appointments. A prosthodontist will administer anti-anxiety drugs to calm the patient. The American Dental Association says that about 22 percent of adults report avoiding visits to the dentist due to fear. So, who is considered a candidate for dental sedation?
People with Dental Anxiety
If you have extreme dental anxiety, fear, or nervousness to see a dentist, you can benefit from sedation dentistry. Dental anxiety varies from one person to another. While one person may have minimal fear of receiving a routine checkup or a dental treatment like dental filling and tooth extraction, some people experience severe phobia such as shaking, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and pain attacks. Sedation helps relax a patient and calm the nerves.
Problem of Gag Reflex
If you have a serious gag reflex, it may cause inconvenience during a dental procedure. Having tools and hands in the mouth is likely to trigger reflex action in some people, thus disrupting or slowing down the procedure. Our dental specialist uses a mild form of sedation to reduce gag reflex, allowing him or her to work on your dental issue without interruption.
Sensitive Gums and Teeth
Sensitivity of gums and teeth can make dental treatment very uncomfortable. If you are hypersensitive, you will experience ease and comfort when you receive sedation before a procedure.
Who is Not Eligible?
If you are allergic to the sedation drug, you may not receive it. Sedation is not recommended for women who are pregnant or if a patient has a medical condition that might not be compatible. Our prosthodontist will consider your medical history, any current medications you may be using, and the dental treatment you need. Book an appointment with our dental team so that we decide the appropriate treatment and the type and level of sedation you need.
Excellence By Choice
Our highly trained staff will make your visit, regardless of the procedure, an easy and enjoyable experience.
