Stop These Habits As They Could Break Your Dental Veneers

Stop These Habits As They Could Break Your Dental VeneersIf you have cracked or chipped teeth, discolored teeth, gapped teeth, or teeth that don't match in size or shape, dental veneers can help perfect your smile. When you receive these prostheses, you can care for them the same you do your natural teeth. Taking good care of veneers can allow them to last up to fifteen years. Avoid these habits that could potentially damage or break your veneers.

Teeth Grinding

Veneer wearers who habitually grind their teeth or clench their jaw can easily crack, chip, or break their prostheses. The force that grinding exerts on veneers, can damage them. Besides, teeth grinding can cause other bite problems such as chronic jaw pain, tension headaches, TMJ disorder, and difficulty sleeping. Wearing a custom mouthguard can help prevent damage to your veneers as well as your natural teeth.

Chewing On Hard Objects

Men in particular are fond of chewing on ice. If you have the habit of chewing on hard objects, your veneers may be about to break. Habits such as chewing on pencils, pens, fingernails, and ice not only damage veneers but also the natural teeth. It is best you stop them. Avoid using teeth as tools for opening packages, too.

Other Veneer Damaging Habits

Besides grinding teeth and chewing on objects, other habits that can damage your veneers and cut short their lifespan are; the use of abrasive whitening toothpaste and hard-bristled toothbrush. Consider using a soft-bristled brush and toothpaste without abrasive components.

Last but not least, reduce or avoid beverages such as black tea, red wine, soda, and coffee because they can discolor your veneers. Porcelain veneers are often considered stain-resistant, however, they can still become stained around the edges. Tobacco users should also stop their habit because it too leads to staining of veneers.

Contact our prosthodontics office today to find out how you can care for your veneers properly to extend their lifespan and ensure they function effectively. We want to make sure that your prosthesis lasts for long and serves you as desired without needing replacement too soon.
